Irene Viola Awarded NWO WISE Grant

Publication date: 2020-12-15

Distributed and Interactive System (DIS) tenure-track researcher Irene Viola has been awarded a NWO Women In Science Excel (WISE) grant, which will be used to fund a PhD position on the topic of User-centered optimization for immersive multimedia systems.

The project will focus on optimizing transmission and rendering of immersive media contents. In particular, the focus is on designing and integrating novel algorithms to improve compression and transmission efficiency of immersive media contents through Quality of Experience (QoE) optimization. We want to explore how to maximize the QoE for the user, while adhering to the technological constraints. Such optimization can be performed at the acquisition, transmission and rendering stage.

The WISE programme provides talented female researchers an opportunity to develop or expand their own research group at one of the NWO research institutes. With a focus on guidance and the right facilities, the programme continues to provide talented international and national researchers with a great career path towards a tenured position.

Irene Viola completed her PhD at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, where she graduated with a thesis on transmission and visual quality of light field contents. In August 2019, she joined CWI’s DIS as a postdoc on the topic of QoE for immersive media, within the EU project VRTogether. As of October 2020, she is a tenure-track researcher in the group.
