DIS at CHI 2018

Publication date: 22-03-2018

CWI’s Distributed and Interactive Systems group will be present at CHI 2018 showcasing their research. CHI is the flagship conference of ACM SIGCHI, the premier international society for professionals, academics and students who are interested in human-technology & human-computer interaction. DIS will present 3 research highlights at CHI: a case-study of developing a multi-sensory clubbing experience during Amsterdam Dance Event 2016, a poster on designing preproduction tools for multiscreen TV viewing, and a session on classifying news media sympathy on Twitter after crisis events. CWI contributes with a case study, a late-breaking work paper, and a long paper.

The case study reflects on the development of a multi-sensory clubbing experience during ADE 2016, where the talk will discuss how the entire experience was developed end-to-end and deployed at the event through the collaboration of several project partners from industries such as art and design, music, food, technology and research. The late-breaking work proposes to integrate the creation of companion screen content in a single object-based preproduction tool for multiscreen TV viewing. It identifies, from the perspective of TV production professionals, the best paradigm and the needed features to support content authoring for multiscreen viewing experiences. Our full paper investigates bias in coverage between Western and Arab media on Twitter after the November 2015 Beirut and Paris terror attacks. Using two Twitter datasets covering each attack, the paper investigates using crowdsourcing and Natural Language Processing techniques how Western and Arab media differed in coverage bias, sympathy bias, and resulting information propagation.
